What is Fractions

Ayush had learnt about fractions in Classes IV and V, so whenever possible he would try to use fractions. One occasion was when he forgot his lunch at home. His friend Ruchita invited him to share her lunch. She had five pooris in her lunch box. So, Ayush and Ruchita took two pooris each. Then Ruchita made two equal halves of the fifth poori and gave one-half to Ayush and took the other half herself. Thus, both Ayush and Ruchita had 2 full pooris and one-half poori.

Introduction to Number Systems

Introduction 

Number systems use different number bases. A number base indicates how many different digits are available when using a particular numbering system. For example, decimal is number base 10, which means it uses ten digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Binary is number base 2, which means that is uses two digits: 0 and 1. Different number bases are needed for different purposes. Humans use number base 10 whereas computers use binary.
The number base determines how many digits are needed to represent a number. For example, the number 78 in decimal (base 10) requires two digits. The binary (base 2) equivalent is 1001110 which requires seven digits. As a consequence of this, there are many occasions in computing when very long binary numbers are needed. To solve this problem, other number bases can be used, which require fewer digits to represent numbers. For example, some aspects of computing use number base 16 which is referred to as hexadecimal.





Natural Number Definition

As explained in the introduction part, Natural numbers are the numbers which are positive in nature and includes numbers from 1 till infinity(∞). These numbers are countable and are generally used for calculation purpose.  The set of natural numbers are represented by the letter “N”.

Types of triangles based on angles....
  1. Acute Triangle

    An acute triangle is a triangle whose all the three interior angles are acute. In other words, if all interior angles are less than 90 degrees, then it is an acute-angled triangle. The figure given below illustrates an acute triangle.

    Obtuse Triangle

    Obtuse triangles are those in which one of the three interior angles has a measure greater than 90 degrees. In other words, if one of the angles in a triangle is an obtuse angle, then the triangle is called an obtuse-angled triangle. The figure given below illustrates an obtuse triangle.

    Right Triangle

    A right triangle is a triangle in which one of the angles is 90 degrees. In a right-angled triangle, the side opposite to the right angle (90-degree angle) will be the longest side and is called the hypotenuse. You may come across triangle types with combined names like right isosceles triangle and such, but this only implies that the triangle has two equal sides with one of the interior angles being 90 degrees. The figure given below illustrates a right triangle.

Introduction


You have studied about triangles and their various properties in your earlier classes. You know that a closed figure formed by three intersecting lines is called a triangle. (‘Tri’ means ‘three’). A triangle has three sides, three angles and three vertices. For example, in triangle ABC, denoted as Δ ABC (see Fig. 7.1); AB, BC, CA are the three sides, ∠ A, ∠ B, ∠ C are the three angles and A, B, C are three vertices. In Chapter 6, you have also studied some properties of triangles. In this chapter, you will study in details about the congruence of triangles, rules of congruence, some more properties of triangles and inequalities in a triangle. You have already verified most of these properties in earlier classes. We will now prove some of them.


Following are the basic properties of triangles:

  1. The sum of all internal angles of a triangle is always equal to 1800. This is called the angle sum property of a triangle.
  2. The sum of the length of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side.
  3. The side opposite to the largest angle of a triangle is the largest side.
  4. Any exterior angle of the triangle is equal to the sum of its interior opposite angles. This is called the exterior angle property of a triangle.

Scalene Triangle

scalene triangle has all side lengths of different measures. No side will be equal in length to any of the other sides in such a triangle. In a scalene triangle, all the interior angles are also different. The figure given below illustrates a scalene triangle. You can see how none of the sides is equal in length.

Isosceles Triangle

In an isosceles triangle, the lengths of two of the three sides are equal. So, the angles opposite the equal sides are equal to each other. In other words, an isosceles triangle has two equal sides and two equal angles.  The figure given below illustrates an isosceles triangle.

Equilateral Triangle

In an equilateral triangle, all the lengths of the sides are equal. In such a case, each of the interior angles will have a measure of 60 degrees. Since the angles of an equilateral triangle are same, it is also known as an equiangular triangle. The figure given below illustrates an equilateral triangle.
